The helpfulness of your landlord or property owner can vary, but if your building is managed by a building management company, they likely have experience providing this data. It's a good idea to ask if they have a system in place to allocate energy use to tenants, which may already be included in your monthly service charge.
Even better, they might have sub-meters installed that track energy usage by tenant space, giving you access to actual meter readings.
Here’s the data we recommend you request:
- Total square metres (m²) of the building
- Square metres (m²) occupied by your organisation
- Annual electricity and gas consumption (in kWh) for the whole building or your portion
- Water usage (in m³) for the whole building or your portion
- Waste (in tonnes) by waste type for the whole building or your portion
If your landlord doesn't have a building manager or management system in place, consider providing them with an Excel spreadsheet containing these data points for easy completion.
